Mom’s Snickerdoodles

There’s something so nostalgic and warm about making a recipe from your childhood kitchen 🏡 My mom gave me this recipe when I got married, among others in a beautiful handmade cookbook.

I didn’t have shortening when I made this recipe so I doubled the butter and added 2 teaspoons of vanilla to give it that rich, creamy texture.

Crisp on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside, these classics are the perfect addition to your next holiday party or even your next movie night in, cozied up with a mug of hot cocoa 🍪☕️🥛.

I love snickerdoodles. They’re the perfect amount of sweet and are always so thick and soft. I also loved rolling them around in the sugar as a kid, making sure they were all covered equally so that no bite was missing the extra cinnamon sugar. I will definitely be making several batches of these over the next few weeks as the weather continues to get colder and we enter the holiday season. Mom's Snickerdoodles

* cook time: 8 minutes
* total time: 28 minutes
* yield: 20-30 cookies

Ingredients:

– 1/2 cup butter, softened
– 1/2 cup shortening
– 1 1/2 cups sugar
– 2 eggs
– 2 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste (optional)
– 2 3/4 cup flour
– 1 tsp cream of tartar
– 1 tsp baking soda
– 1/4 tsp salt
Cinnamon Sugar
– 2 tbsp sugar
– 2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Cream together the butter and shortening. Add in the sugar and eggs and mix until thoroughly combined.

  2. Whisk together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and blend together.

  3. Using a cookie scoop, measure out about 1" round balls.

  4. Mix together the cinnamon sugar. Evenly coat the cookie balls in the cinnamon sugar mixture and place on an ungreased or parchment-lined baking sheet

  5. Bake for 8-10 minutes.

    Notes:
    – If you don't have shortening, you can double the amount of butter.
    – I love the warmth and depth adding vanilla bean paste gives to these cookies, but if you are a purist, you can leave that out.
    – Add apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice to the cinnamon sugar mixture if you're feeling extra festive.
